Vacation (2008)
The assured second feature from director Kadoi Hajime (Tana no Sumi), Vacation subtly explores the effects of capital punishment on both the prisoner and the prison guard. Based on Yoshimura Akira's short story, Vacation unfolds in two threads, revealing a prison guard's relationships with his wife-to-be and a death-row prisoner. Veteran actor Kobayashi Kaoru (Tokyo Tower - Mom & Me, and Sometimes Dad) stars opposite Nishijima Hidetoshi (Freesia: Bullet Over Tears) and Otsuka Nene (Hero).
Cool and calm middle-aged prison guard Hirai (Kobayashi Kaoru) has developed a quiet bond with death row inmate Kaneda (Nishijima Hidetoshi). As Kaneda's days count down to the deadline, Hirai volunteers to be his "crutch", the guard who accompanies the condemned to the gallows and holds the body. In return, he gets a one-week vacation prior to the execution, during which time he has a nervous arranged marriage meeting with single mother Mika (Otsuka Nene).
