The Federation starship USS Kelvin investigates a "lightning storm" in space. It is soon discovered to be a black hole and the Narada, a Romulan mining vessel, emerges from it, attacking the Kelvin, inflicting heavy damage and demanding that its captain, Richard Robau, be sent aboard. On the way to the shuttle, Robau orders his first officer George Kirk to evacuate the ship and relieves command to him. As Robau enters the docking bay of the Narada, the crew takes him to the bridge and unsuccessfully interrogates him about the whereabouts of Spock, after which the Romulan captain, Nero, kills him. Learning of Robau's death, Kirk orders an emergency evacuation and upon realizing that auto-pilot is destroyed, he sacrifices himself and the Kelvin by colliding it into the Romulan ship in order to cover the rest of the crew's escape. On one of the medical shuttles, George's wife Winona gives birth to a son: James Tiberius Kirk. Without the influence of his father, James Kirk grows up as a rebellious youth.

On Vulcan, a young Spockhalf-Vulcan, half-Humanis tormented by bullies for the 35th time and finally reacts emotionally by lashing out physically, over taunts made about his mixed parentage. His father, Sarek, tells him that he has to choose his own path and his own destiny. Many years later, Spock stands before the members of the Vulcan Science Academy, having applied there and at Starfleet Academy. They offer him a place in the Vulcan Academy, noting his outstanding record, despite his "disadvantage" (which the Vulcan Science Council states) of being half human. Taking offence to this, he declines the position and instead joins Starfleet Academy, ultimately graduating and becoming a teacher.

At age 22, Kirk has grown into an intelligent but reckless and cynical young man. He meets Uhura and Captain Christopher Pike in a bar in Iowa, where, after breaking up a brutal bar brawl involving Kirk, Pike convinces Kirk to enlist in Starfleet Academy, citing Kirk's exceptional aptitude and unused potential. During his eventful three-year education on Earth, he is suspended for cheating on the Kobayashi Maru test designed by Spock, having reprogrammed the simulator out of his own disregard of the concept of the 'no-win scenario', saying that he doesn't believe in not winning. Despite this, Kirk is smuggled on board the USS Enterprise by his friend Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy as a sick patient, as the Enterprise, along with six other ships hastily manned by a combination of Starfleet and cadet crews, is sent on its first mission to investigate a distress signal from the planet Vulcan. Captain Pike commands the ship with Spock as his first officer; Uhura is also assigned to the ship after forcing the matter with Spock.
